A Deep Dive into the Education Research Landscape in Kenya and Senegal

A Deep Dive into the Education Research Landscape in Kenya and Senegal

This report analyses educational research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, based on a rapid mapping of 47 countries (2018-2023). It further provides a deeper assessment of the educational research landscape through case studies of Kenya and Senegal, and offers a detailed thematic analysis based on foundational learning research data from these two countries.

While access to education has expanded in recent years, a learning crisis persists in most African countries. Research and the generation of contextual knowledge are essential methods for understanding and tackling challenges related to educational outcomes. Hence, it is critical for Africa to generate this knowledge and use it to improve education outcomes. These observations have motivated our recent assessment of the field of education research in Africa, addressing the question: “What will it take to enhance the field of education research in Africa?”, as posed by funders of the Enhancing Education Research in Africa (EERA) project.

This report complements the “Situational Analysis of Education Research in Sub-Saharan Africa” and the concept notes for interventions, both published as part of the entire EERA project process. It takes a detailed look at the main players in the production of education research and goes deeper into two countries’ contexts, specifically, Kenya and Senegal.
